Liquid chlorine spill in Ormond Beach

Date & Time: Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009, @ 12:22pm
Location: 185 S. Yonge Street (U.S. 1), Ormond Beach
Business Name: Pinch-a-Penny Pool Patio & Spa

Ormond Beach Police and Fire Departments and Volusia County Fire Dept. Hazmat units are on the scene of a liquid chlorine spill that occurred this afternoon at the Pinch-a-Penny pool store. The spill occurred when a chlorine storage tank ruptured in back of the business. Approximately 1900 gallons of 10% sodium hypochlorite (common swimming pool chorine) spilled from the ruptured tank onto adjoining properties. Several surrounding buildings were temporarily evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

Residents living near the business were asked to close their windows and turn off air conditioners until the chlorine smell dissipates. The chlorine liquid that escaped was washed down and soil and air tests are underway. Northbound US-1 was closed for a short period of time but has been re-opened.

City of Ormond Beach environmental officials are following up and will monitor the mitigation and clean-up efforts.
