Volusia and Flagler
counties’ CUDARC begins its first year
The College and University Disaster
Assessment and Research Center is believed to be the first of its kind
in the nation.
CUDARC has representatives from each of the five colleges and
universities with campuses in Volusia and Flagler counties: Bethune-Cookman
College, Daytona Beach Community College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University, Stetson University and the Daytona Beach Campus of the
University of Central Florida.
The purpose of CUDARC is to conduct research of the local community for
use by emergency planners. The research findings will help identify
needs prior to, during and following a disaster.
CUDARC has received its initial funding from the Flagler-Volusia County
Higher Education Consortium, which consists of the same five colleges
and universities. Dr. Thomas C. Kelly, who served as Volusia County’s
Manager for more than 20 years, is serving as the Consortiums Executive
Director.
CUDARC is co-chaired by Dr. John Schorr of Stetson University and Dr.
Ram Nayar of Daytona Beach Community College. CUDARC has applied for a
grant to conduct research into the evacuation transportation needs,
communications capabilities and sheltering requirements of low-income
and special needs populations in selected areas of Volusia County.
The program serves as a model to be emulated by colleges and
universities in other part of the country.
