Volusia Prepares Business gets the backing of Enterprise Florida
E-Florida is hoping that successes in Volusia County can be used as models for other parts of the state.

Mickie Valente, the Director of Partner and Investor Relations with Enterprise Florida, wears the extra duty hat as E-Florida’s point person for disaster planning and response. Ms. Valenti worked with Volusia County Division of Emergency Management and local business leaders in developing the VPB concept and objectives.

Emergency Management Director Jim Ryan, Mickie Valenti, along with Pat White and Richard Moore of Jim Ryan’s staff developed a series of objectives for VPB to accomplish within its first year. The Lessons Learned in Volusia County will be shared with emergency management offices, economic development groups and businesses organizations across the state.

The first year objectives include an expanded outreach program so that all businesses, large and small and regardless of the nature of their industry, will be provided with training to help them develop emergency response and disaster recovery plans. To do this Volusia County Emergency Management is teaming with private sector companies, and such diverse government organizations as hazardous material response team, the District VI Local Emergency Planning Committee and the Volusia County Agricultural Extension Agent.

Another project is to develop a resource directory of the most in-demand items needed following a disaster so they can be quickly acquired and put to use. The Greater Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Flagler-Volusia County Workforce Development Board are heading up this project.

A third project is the establishment of an emergency coordination center for the business community to be used during response to and recovery from a disaster. Chambers of commerce and other business association would assist in staffing it. The center would be linked to the Emergency Support Function 18 desk (Business and Industry liaison) in the Volusia County Emergency Operations Center.
