The Public Protection Department is comprised of seven divisions,
providing services to the visitors and citizens of Volusia County that are
impacted most traumatically during emergencies resulting from accident,
illness, loss of property or life. The Department attempts to mitigate the
effects of those events through effective planning (Emergency Management),
appropriate preventive actions (Animal Control, Beach Safety and Fire
Prevention), as well as prompt and efficient response to emergencies
(Beach Safety, Emergency Medical Services and Fire Services). The
Department also meets statutory responsibilities as required for
Corrections and the Medical Examiner.
The Emergency Services Institute and the Strategic Reserve are examples
of programs within the Public Protection Department that cross Division
lines; pulling together multiple resources to elevate service delivery
within the Divisions thereby enhancing their services to the public.
