Q. What is the Volusia County Local Business Tax?
A. The Volusia County Local Business Tax is a tax levied by Volusia County, in accordance with Florida Statute 205 and Volusia County Ordinance 114-1, for the privilege of engaging in or managing any business, profession, or occupation within our jurisdiction.

Q. Who is required to register with Volusia County to pay the Volusia County Local Business Tax?
A. All businesses with a physical base of operations within the County of Volusia are required to register with Volusia County, pay the Volusia County Local Business Tax annually, and display a current Volusia County Local Business Tax Receipt.

Charitable, religious, fraternal, youth, civic, service, or other such organization who have registered as a 501(c)(3) organization with the IRS and as a tax exempt non-profit organization with the State of Florida are not required to register to pay the Volusia County Local Business Tax. Click here for a letter from Volusia County to keep for your records.  

The Individuals listed below with not more than one employee or helper, and who use their own capital only, not in excess of $1,000, may engage in any business or occupation in counties in which they live without being required to pay a business tax:

  • All non service related disabled persons physically incapable of manual labor (the exemption is allowed only upon the certificate of a reputable physician, that the applicant claiming the exemption is disabled, the nature and extent of the disability being specified therein)
  • Disabled veterans 
  • Widows with minor dependents
  • Persons 65 years of age or older


Q. How do I register to pay the Volusia County Local Business Tax?

Q. How much is the Volusia County Local Business Tax?  

A. The tax amount varies based on the type/types of business, and other factors such as the total number of employees, vending machines, hotel rooms, restaurant seats, etc...  The tax amount for each type of business being conducted range from $6.00 to $1,250.00, with the most common amounts being $22 and $30.

 

Q. When does my business tax receipt expire?
A. The tax year is from October 1 to September 30 of the following year. Renewal notices are mailed July 1 of each year.

 

Q. Can I renew online or over the phone?
A. You can renew your Volusia County Business Tax with a credit card on-line at www.volusia.county-taxes.com.  There is a convenience fee for payment by credit card.

 

Q. Do I need a Volusia County Business Tax Receipt if my business is based in my home?
A. Yes.  All businesses in our limits are required to have a current Volusia County Business Tax Receipt, regardless of whether they are home based or commercial.  If your home is located in the Unincorporated County, rules and regulations for home based businesses can be obtained from the Volusia County Zoning Department.  If your home is in any city's limits you will need to contact the city to find out what their rules are.  Please see our External Links page for the contact information of the cities within our limits.

 

Q. What do I need if my business is located within an incorporated area (in a city's limits) of Volusia County?

A. If your business is located within an incorporated area of Volusia County (in a city's limits), you must acquire that city's Business Tax Receipt first.  A current copy of your city Business Tax Receipt will be required before you can register to pay your Volusia County Business Tax.

To see if your business is located in city limits or the unincorporated area of Volusia County, please visit the Volusia County Property Appraiser's website to do a Location Address Search.  Once you have conducted a search, look in the upper right hand corner of the record to see if your location is in city limits or the unincorporated county.

 

Q. Do I need a Volusia County Business Tax Receipt if my business is not located in Volusia County?

A. No.  Businesses that are physically located outside of Volusia County are required to obtain a Local Business Tax Receipt from the city and/or county in which they are based.  The only exception is for businesses that place vending machines in our limits, which must register the machines that are in our limits. 

 

Businesses operating within the limits of any of the cities in Volusia County may be required to register with those cities.  Please see our External Links page for the contact information of the cities in our limits.

 

Q. What do I need if my business is regulated by a state agency?
A. If your business is regulated by any state agency, you must acquire that respective state license, certificate, or registration before a County Business Tax Receipt can be issued.  Please visit our External Links page for state agency contact information.

 

 

Q. Do I need to register for a Fictitious Name?
A. Proof of Fictitious Name Registration is required per FS 205.023 unless you are exempt. Click here for a list of possible exemptions. Fictitious Name Registration information can be found at www.sunbiz.org.

 

Q. Where do I register a Corporation?
A. Corporations are registered with the Department of State's Division of Corporations.  Registration information can be found at their website, www.sunbiz.org.

Q. Where do I file for a Workers' Compensation Exemption?
A. Workers' Compensation Exemptions are filed with the Florida Department of Financial Services.  More information can be found at their website, http://www.fldfs.com/WC/

Q. Where do I register for a Door to Door Sales Permit?
A. Door to Door Sales Permits are obtained from the Volusia County Clerk of Court.  They can be contacted at 386-736-5911 for additional information
