Scrub Jay

(Aphelocoma coerulescens)

Florida scrub jays are federally protected. They are listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Volusia County’s Environmental Permitting Staff, in cooperation with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has created guidelines to help applicants avoid activities that may violate the Federal Endangered Species Act with regards to Florida scrub-jays.

Environmental Permitting staff will determine if a permit applicant’s parcel falls within the official mapped scrub-jay habitat. If the parcel falls within the mapped habitat, staff will help guide the applicant though the process of obtaining a take permit with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
