Garbage collection

Residents who live in unincorporated areas of Volusia County are provided waste services through Volusia County's Solid Waste and Recycling Division.

Residents are charged for service by an annual $190 non-ad-valorem assessment per residential unit.

Volusia County contracts with Republic Services to provide garbage collection to residents living in single-family homes or multi-family dwellings with no more than four units.

Single-family homes on more than 10 acres are required by law to provide their own proper disposal of waste and may choose to participate in the county's subscription services by calling the Solid Waste and Recycling Division at:

386-257-6021  Daytona Beach
386-943-7889  West Volusia
386-423-3862  New Smyrna Beach
386-574-0598  Osteen

All materials meant for collection (household garbage, recycling or yard waste) must be at the curb by 6 a.m. on the proper pick-up day.

Garbage pickup is once a week in the 96-gallon cart that is provided free of charge. Materials must be enclosed in this secure container and placed within 10 feet of the curb by 6 a.m. on the designated pick-up day. The hauler has until 8 p.m. to collect the waste.

Collection service allows each residence to place four typical automobile-sized tires out for collection every eight weeks. These tires can be on or off the rims. Please place tires out for collection with your regular household garbage.

Yard waste is picked up at the curb and mulched at the landfill for reuse. The equivalent of four 32-gallon containers or eight plastic bags per household can be picked up each week.

Please DO NOT place yard waste in your 96-gallon cart.

Please DO NOT mix yard waste with any other types of waste.

Appliances and furniture

Appliances also may be collected curbside. Please place appliances, swing sets, water heaters and other metal junk on your curb and then call us at 386-943-7889 to schedule collection. Once you have contacted us, a special pickup will be scheduled. Bulky items like these will be collected within 48 business hours of notification.

Up to four pieces of furniture (mattresses, box springs, couches, chairs) may be placed at the curb for collection. Please place these items out for collection with your regular household garbage.

If you have more than four pieces for furniture, please contact the Solid Waste and Recycling Division at 386-943-7889 to schedule collection.

Note: A great way to recycle unwanted items still in good shape is by taking the item to an area thrift shop. For more information, see what you can recycle.

Construction debris

Construction and demolition debris or debris from home improvements, such as fencing, tile, roofing material, countertops, concrete, wallboard, baseboards, lumber or insulation ARE NOT included in this service.

Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste - such as car batteries, all automobile related liquids, rechargeable batteries, paint, pesticides, fluorescent lamps, bullets or shotgun shells, biohazardous waste, sharps (needles), and pool and spa chemicals -  ARE NOT included in this service.

Please bring these items - with the exception of biohazardous waste - to the Household Hazardous Waste site at the Tomoka Landfill or the West Volusia Transfer Station.

Disposal of biohazardous waste can be coordinated with the Volusia County Health Department.
