FLORIDA’S “MOVE OVER” LAW
Protecting Public
Safety Personnel on the Highways
Implemented in 2002,
Florida motorist are required to take specific action when approaching
an area on Florida roadways where emergency vehicles are present and
displaying emergency lights. Known as the “Move Over” law, motorists are
required to move over to a lane not adjacent to the emergency vehicle or
vehicles. If it is not practical or safe to do so, the motorist must
slow down while maintaining a safe speed. The law states that you must
slow down to at least 20 mph less than the posted speed limit
or
travel at 5 miles per hour when the posted speed limit is 20 mph or
less, when driving on a two-lane road. Be careful not to impede or block
the flow of traffic.
Enacted in 42
states, this law is intended to protect emergency workers and personnel
at the scene of an emergency incident or other situation where public
safety personnel are present.
