RECKLESS
DRIVER WHO NEARLY HIT DEPUTY CAUGHT
A
man who realized after watching the news that there was a fugitive in
his house called the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office early Wednesday
morning. Deputies were quickly dispatched to the Ormond Beach home and
surrounded it. They were then able to arrest Shaune Stamper, who was
wanted for driving recklessly and aiming his car directly at a deputy
Tuesday afternoon.
Sheriff’s
Office dispatchers got a call at approximately 1:03 a.m. from 1709
Carolina Ave. when a man there realized Stamper, who was sitting in the
living room, was a wanted man. The residents were apparently Stamper’s
friends. The first deputies arrived on scene within two minutes of being
dispatched and carefully set up a perimeter around the home in the event
Stamper tried to make a run for it. However, once deputies found Stamper
inside, he did not resist.
At
approximately 1:18 p.m. Tuesday, Albakri was flagged down by a woman
complaining that Stamper was driving recklessly through Arroyo Mobile
Home Park, 955 S. Nova Road. The deputy found the vehicle driving toward
the park exit and he tried flagging it down while he was on foot.
However, the car then aimed straight at the deputy, prompting him to
pull out his weapon and fire two shots. The car then sped past Albakri
and fled. The vehicle, which was apparently not struck by Albakri’s
bullets, was later found abandoned less than a mile away, and witnesses
identified 25-year-old Stamper. When Stamper was arrested the following
morning, he was not injured from the previous day.
Stamper’s
girlfriend was also arrested Wednesday morning. Amy Clough, 31, had been
asked by investigators the previous day to notify the Sheriff’s Office
if she learned the whereabouts of Stamper. She was found in the home
with Stamper when he was captured, and she later admitted to having been
with him for several hours without notifying law enforcement. The New
Smyrna Beach resident was charged with resisting/obstructing an officer
without violence.
Stamper,
from Ormond Beach, was charged with aggravated assault with a motor
vehicle, reckless driving and not having a valid drivers license.
Additionally, he had an active violation of probation warrant. Stamper
and Clough were booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona
Beach without incident.
