SHERIFF'S
OFFICE INVESTIGATING SHOOTING NEAR DELAND
The Volusia County
Sheriff's Office is investigating a Wednesday evening shooting near
DeLand that sent one man to the hospital with a gunshot wound through
his shoulder. The 20-year-old victim was airlifted by a Sheriff's Office
helicopter to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach where he is
being treated for his injuries, which are not considered to be life
threatening. No arrests have been made, but investigators are tracking
down possible suspect leads provided by witnesses.
The Sheriff's
Office was notified at approximately 10:20 p.m. that there was a fight
happening in the street in the 350 block of Lingering Lane. There were
then reports that shots were being fired. When deputies arrived on scene
they found Jacob Sanchez, who is from Pierson, in the street with the
wound to his left shoulder. It was later determined at the hospital that
the shot had collapsed a lung. Witnesses on scene told deputies that
there had been an argument in the street, possibly concerning a woman.
The shooter then walked up to a car, reached into it and pulled out a
handgun. He fired multiple times at Sanchez as the victim tried to
escape, eventually hitting him once. Witnesses said that when Sanchez
fell down the suspect then ran up to him and kicked him while he was on
the ground and yelled at him. The suspect then fled.
Anyone with
information about this shooting is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office
at (386) 860-7866 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida, toll-free, at
1-888-277-TIPS. Callers to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous and can
qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.
