FALSE THEFT REPORTS CATCH UP TO
ORMOND MAN

An Ormond Beach man’s self-imposed troubles started when he reported that car rims he rented were stolen when they actually weren’t. He got away with that scheme for a few months, but trying to pull off a similar scam with some of his girlfriend’s jewelry wasn’t quite as successful. Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies discovered that Christopher Daughtry had pawned the jewelry after reporting it stolen. As a result of the charges filed by the Sheriff’s Office for the thefts and false reports, Daughtry violated his sex offender probation.

In September 2007, Daughtry reported that a set of four chrome rims he had rented were stolen from inside his home at 1133 Avenue G. The rental company said that Daughtry was renting to own the rims and still owed $2,500 at that time before they could be his. Then in June of this year, Daughtry reported that his wallet and some of his girlfriend’s necklaces had been stolen from his house.

Deputies conducted a thorough investigation, finding that the 37-year-old had pawned some jewelry in Orange City on July 7. Investigators went to the pawnshop, photographed the necklaces and collected the pawn ticket with Daughtry’s thumbprint inked on it. The girlfriend later identified the jewelry in the photos as hers, and the pawn ticket thumbprint was confirmed as Daughtry’s. In the process of locating Daughtry to talk with him about the jewelry pawning, the deputy who had taken the report about the stolen rims noticed that a set of chrome rims were now on Daughtry’s car.

Daughtry admitted to falsely reporting the jewelry missing and then pawning it for $550. He said that he needed rent money and he also wanted to get back at his girlfriend who he thought had stolen his wallet. He also admitted to falsely reporting the rims as stolen.

Daughtry was charged with two counts of grand theft, two counts of filing a false police report, dealing in stolen property, violation of pawnbrokers act, and violation of probation. He was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach without incident.
