TWO ARRESTED FOR PIZZA DELIVERYMAN ARMED ROBBERY

Volusia County Sheriff’s investigators didn’t have to go far to track down a man and woman suspected in the armed robbery of a pizza deliveryman that happened late Monday night near DeLand. It turned out that the pair lived only a block away. The robbery victim had told deputies that he delivered a pizza order to the couple, but when he asked for payment, the man pulled out a gun. The suspect demanded money from the deliveryman, and then he and the woman walked away. No shots were fired and no one was injured. The next morning, investigators canvassed the area and eventually found Richard Norwood, who fit the victim’s description of his assailant. Further investigation turned up enough evidence for deputies to obtain a search warrant for Norwood and Summer Madrid’s home. The investigators’ hard work paid off with two arrests less than 24 hours after the robbery.

The robbery happened at 129 Palm Street Monday at approximately 11 p.m. The deliveryman, Scott Frederick, told deputies that he had stopped at the address and saw a black man and white woman waiting in front of the house. The 45-year-old handed the two pizzas to the woman and asked her if the order was correct. She said yes and then the couple started to walk away. Frederick asked for payment. That’s when the man turned around, pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at Frederick. He demanded Frederick’s money, and Frederick handed over the cash from his pockets. The man then ordered Frederick to throw his car keys away from him. Once he did so, the couple walked away. Frederick retrieved his keys and drove back to Papa Johns Pizza to report what happened. Deputies responded to the scene, but did not find the suspects. However, they discovered that the Palm Street address was vacant.

On Tuesday morning, investigators Trever Henderson, David McNamara and Sgt. Patrick Thoman canvassed the area of the robbery, asking neighbors if they noticed anything suspicious from the night before. One block north of the crime scene, they saw a man matching the male suspect’s description, Norwood, coming out of 104 B Rosehill Ave. They talked with Norwood for a few minutes, but he denied knowing anything about the robbery. Investigators then resumed talking with neighbors and found out that Norwood lived with a woman, Madrid, who might match the female suspect’s description. The investigators obtained a drivers license photo of Madrid and presented it in a photo lineup to Frederick. He picked out Madrid. A search warrant was then obtained.

Norwood and Madrid were still home when deputies got the search warrant. Once inside, investigators found a fresh hole cut into the ceiling of a bedroom closet. They went through the hole into the attic and found two pizza boxes had been chopped up and stuffed into a plastic bag. Norwood and Madrid were arrested. Norwood was charged with armed robbery with a firearm and Madrid was charged with principal to armed robbery. They were both transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
