DEPUTIES INVESTIGATE DOUBLE HOMICIDE

Volusia County Sheriff's investigators are at the scene of a residence in Ormond-by-the-Sea, where the bodies of two adult men were located inside the home on Sunday afternoon.

Deputies were dispatched to 58 Alamanda Drive after a woman and her boyfriend drove to the house because the woman had been unable to contact her adult son. When the two arrived at the house and got no answer, the boyfriend said he opened the door just a crack and saw a body lying on the ground. The man shut the door and called 911 at 3:18 p.m. The first responding deputy arrived at the scene and went into the house and found two bodies on the living room floor.

The victims haven't been identified and the cause of death hasn't been positively determined yet. The Sheriff's Office's Major Case Unit is leading the investigation.

Update #1  11/16/09 - 2:21 p.m.

Due to the decomposition of the bodies, an autopsy was required in order to positively identify the victims and determine how they died. Based on the findings of today's autopsies by the Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office, the Sheriff's Office has officially classified the case as a double homicide. Due to the ongoing investigation, the cause of death is not being released at this time.

The victims have been positively identified through their fingerprints as:

• Michael John Floyd, age 43
• Andrew Robert Kakowski, age 26

Floyd rented the home where the bodies were located, and Kakowski was an acquaintance of Floyd's who had been staying there for the past month or two.

Crime scene technicians were back at the house today collecting evidence at the scene. That process is expected to be completed today. Investigators with the Sheriff's Office's Major Case Unit are interviewing friends and relatives of the victims and trying to retrace the victims' steps to determine where they were and who they were with in the hours and days leading up to the murders.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
