TRAFFIC UNIT STEPPING UP ENFORCEMENT FOR BIKE WEEK
The
Port Orange Police Department Traffic Unit will be stepping up
enforcement February 29th through March 9th, 2008 in response
to increased traffic throughout the area due to the area Bike
Week event. An increase in motorcycle accidents, crash related
injuries and traffic fatalities were notable during the 2007
event. Traffic officers will be concentrating on all types of
traffic violations, in particular those violations which often
cause crashes; running red lights, speeding, violation of
right of way, failing to stop at stop signs, careless driving,
improper turns and lane changes, etc. Please be attentive of
your surroundings, ride quiet and ride safe. The F.S.S.
regarding motorcycle headgear is noted below.
316.211 Equipment
for motorcycle and moped riders.--
(1) A
person may not operate or ride upon a motorcycle unless the
person is properly wearing protective headgear securely
fastened upon his or her head which complies with Federal
Motorcycle Vehicle Safety Standard 218 promulgated by the
United States Department of Transportation. The Department of
Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles shall adopt this standard by
agency rule.
(b) Notwithstanding
subsection (1), a person over 21 years of age may operate or
ride upon a motorcycle without wearing protective
headgear securely fastened upon his or her head if such person
is covered by an insurance policy providing for at least
$10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred as a result
of a crash while operating or riding on a motorcycle.
