FORMER CITY EMPLOYEE CHARGED WITH GRAND
THEFT
The
Port Orange Police Department Criminal Investigation Division
was contacted by City of Port Orange Finance Director John
Shelley on May 2, 2008 regarding allegations of an internal
theft.
A
four month long investigation by Detective David Meyer, along
with supporting documents presented by the Finance Department
and reviewed by Brent Millikan & Company, P.A. were
provided to the State Attorney’s Office for review. The
State Attorney’s Office reviewed the charging document
provided and agreed that Lori Weiss unlawfully and knowingly
temporarily deprived the City of $ 240,539.93. She was able to
write 278 personal checks to the City of Port Orange during a
nine month period. She then replaced the total amount that she
stole in cash from the daily City deposits.
On
September 30, 2008 Detective David Meyer obtained an arrest
warrant against
Lori
Weiss for the charge of Grand Theft. The warrant was signed by
Judge Joseph Will and he stipulated the bond amount of $
1,500.00. Lori Weiss then turned herself in on said charge at
the Volusia County Branch Jail; she was then bonded out
directly thereafter.
