                     PORT ORANGE NAMES ASSISTANT CHIEF OF POLICE

The Port Orange Police Department is proud to announce the promotion of Captain Wayne M. Miller to the rank of Assistant Chief of Police. The promotion is effective Monday January 19th, 2009.  

Originally from Utica, New York, Assistant Chief Miller has been employed with the Port Orange Police Department for 23.5 years. He began his career as a reserve patrol officer with the Port Orange Police Department in 1985. Since that time he has worked through the ranks as a patrol officer, motorcycle officer, field training officer, traffic homicide investigator, corporal, sergeant, lieutenant and captain. He has spent the last three years overseeing all administrative functions of the Department as administrative captain. Assistant Chief Miller holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Law Enforcement Management. Additionally, he is a graduate of the 217th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, the 59th session of the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Institute, the 34th session of the Florida Criminal Justice Chief Executive Seminar and the first session of the Florida Police Chief’s Association/Florida Department of Law Enforcement Future Chief’s Seminar. During his lengthy tenure at the Department, Assistant Chief Miller has received over 90 commendation/recognition achievements and is a two time recipient of the Port Orange Police Officer of the Year award achieving this honor in 1990 and 1994. 

Assistant Chief Miller is an active member of the Florida Police Chief’s Association where he serves on the conference committee and additionally he is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Law Enforcement Executive Development Association, the FBI National Academy Associates and the Volusia-Flagler Police Chief’s Association.  

Assistant Chief Miller will have purview over all patrol and administrative operations and will assist Police Chief Gerald Monahan. Jr., with planning, organizing and directing all activities of the police department. Assistant Chief Miller is a resident of Port Orange and is married to his wife Debbie and together they have raised four children.
