OFFICER ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTS HIMSELF
The Port Orange Police Department is
currently investigating an accidental discharge of a firearm
involving Officer Jerry Zito, a 14 year veteran of the
Department. Port Orange Rescue advised it appears the lower
abdomen was the location of entry. The incident took place in
the training room of the police department. Officer Zito was by
himself when this occurred. Officer Zito is being treated at
Halifax Hospital. Additional information to follow.
Update: 8:07 p.m.
He is out of surgery regarding his
lower abdomen injury and is listed in stable condition at
Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach. This incident remains
under investigation.
