POLICE INVESTIGATING SHOOTING INCIDENT

Shortly after midnight on this date Derek Wendell of Daytona Beach (08/06/1988) called 9-1-1 from a Daytona Beach convenience store and advised dispatchers as he was driving alone, he had been shot at by unknown subjects in a passing vehicle. It was determined that the incident took place in Port Orange at the intersection of Madeline Avenue and Sunset Cove Drive.

Wendell told investigators after he fueled his vehicle at a Daytona Beach Shores gas station, he noticed he was being followed by white vehicle, possibly a Buick or a Pontiac, as he traveled into Port Orange west over the Port Orange Bridge. The vehicle followed Wendell to the above intersection where it pulled alongside Wendell’s vehicle and fired several shots in his direction. Wendell had been wounded in the left leg and immediately slammed on his brakes as the white vehicle fled westbound on Madeline Avenue. Wendell drove himself to the nearby convenience store in Daytona Beach and called 9-1-1.

Wendell was transported to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach with non-life threatening injuries and advised investigators he did not know the identities of the occupants of the white vehicle or why they would have shot at his vehicle. The incident is under investigation by the Port Orange Criminal Investigations Division and anyone with information regarding this incident can contact Detective Serena Besuden at 386-506-5886.
