The West Volusia Community Traffic Safety meeting convened at 8:40 am at the Florida Highway Patrol Office in DeLand chaired by John Izzo, Consultant.

Problems and Solutions

Tony Nosse presented the "Problems and Solutions" worksheet. The following problems were discussed:

499-3 (SR 15A/SR 44 @ the Circle K)
1199-3 (SR 44 @ Hill) Sun glare when traveling EB in the am.
The need for a school crossing guard at Voorhis and Alabama
US 17 and Beresford: Turn signals and Bus stop too close to the intersection.
SR 44 and SR 415 repave job: The NB through traffic is stopping and backup is creating problems.

It was noted Florida is a "Top 10" State and Volusia County is a "Top 10" County for the number of crashes.

Sgt. Rod Phillips from the FDOT Motor Carrier Compliance (MCC) section discussed his responsibilities and problems that the MCC officers encounter. He stated the majority of truck crashes occur on I-4 and I-95. He would like to bring in a video next month for us.

It was stated there is a $2,500 grant from the FDOT for posters and copies of safety related items.

Diane Camacho stated there is a need for pool noodles and shelf lining to be used at the car seat checkpoints.

Tony informed the group that safety grant concept papers are due by the end of the month.

Joe Cohen stated Child Safety checkpoint dates are as follows:

4/29/00 at DeLand Ford/Lincoln
5/6/00 will be held in conjunction with Spring Fest in Deltona (across from Pine Ridge High School). They need volunteers. They also are having a problem obtaining car seats to give to those that can't afford them.

The next car seat installation training will be held 6/15, 6/16, 6/22 and 6/23/00.

Beth Tolliver (Progressive Insurance) was elected Vice Chairperson at the Statewide CTST Coalition meeting. Operation Lifesaver was discussed. The next meeting will be in Jacksonville in July.
