Local historian Joe Vetter will describe the New Smyrnea Colony, the largest attempt at British colonization in the New World, from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, 1001 S. Dixie Freeway.
Dr. Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish physician, brought 1,400 indentured servants from Minorca, Greece and Italy to what is now New Smyrna Beach in 1768. The servants carved out an indigo plantation while enduring mistreatment under Turnbull's overseers. Nine years later, they abandoned the plantation and settled in St. Augustine.
