Few things are as remarkable as pulling a fresh potato from the earth and then baking it or making home-made potato chips.
Joe Sewards, an urban horticulture agent with the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension, will offer tips on growing potatoes from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Chisholm Center, 520 S. Clara Ave., DeLand.
Sewards will demonstrate the use of hydroponics, containers, raised beds and hay bales to grow backyard potatoes. He will also discuss proper fertilization, disease and insect control, and integrated pest management techniques.
Light refreshments will be served, and handouts will be available. Master gardeners will sell bags of seed potatoes for $5 a bag. They will also have a drawing for a Earth Machine compost maker valued at $119; tickets are $2 each or five for $10.
Reservations are requested; call 386-822-5778. The $5 program fee can be paid at the door with cash or check.
