Staged reading of 'Fight or Flight'

Event Date(s)

Begins: February 16, 2019 7:30 pm
Ends: February 16, 2019 8:30 pm

Local actors will read from “Flight or Flight,” an original play written by Karen Poulsen, during two staged readings at the Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach, 726 Third Ave. The free presentations will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17.

The play introduces young Amelia and her sister Pidge growing up in Kansas in 1907 with their grandparents. The play then moves to 1937, when Earhart and Fred Noonan take their final flight. Suddenly, Earhart is transported to her old life, and exciting adventures ensure as the young sisters join the older Earhart on imaginary flights to Europe and fight monsters on their journey to a fantasy world. Earhart has some nostalgic and tender moments that culminate in her coming to terms with her fate.

The actors include Leira Maynard as young Amelia, Lila Gay as Pidge, Heidi Ackerson as the adult Earhart, Keith Poulsen and Jeanna Carley as their grandparents, and Johnnie Nicastro as Noonan.

Reservations are not required. For more information, call the Little Theatre at 386-423-1246.

The readings are part of the Volusia County Public Library's NEA Big Read, a six-week celebration of “A Wizard of Earthsea,” a 1968 fantasy novel by Ursula K. Le Guin. The NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
