The Volusia County Council will cut the ribbon for the new Michael Eader Turnbull Bay Bridge at 9 a.m. Friday, March 1, on the west side of the bridge.
The 660-foot bridge is 440 feet longer and 20 feet wider than the bridge it replaced. In addition to two lanes for vehicular traffic, the new bridge features 8-foot-wide safety shoulders with traffic barriers and 6-foot sidewalks on each side. The $7.9 million project was funded in cooperation with the Florida Department of Transportation using federal and local funds.
The bridge was named after the late Michael Eader, a New Smyrna Beach resident who encouraged Volusia County officials to keep the old bridge open during construction of the new bridge.
The old bridge, which has been demolished, had deteriorated with age and required frequent repairs.
