Dr. Ashley Andrews Lear will discuss the friendship between Pulitzer Prize winning authors Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Ellen Glasgow from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle.
Andrews, a professor of humanities at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, wrote the 2018 book “The Remarkable Kinship of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Ellen Glasgow.”
Together, Rawlings and Glasgow broke the mold for women writers of their time. Rawlings published 36 books and short stories 1928 to 1955; she is best known for the novel “The Yearling” and her autobiography, “Cross Creek.” During more than 40 years of literary work beginning in 1897, Glasgow published 20 books, many of which focused on female independence and the changing world of the South.
