Transform your yard into a bird sanctuary

Local author and wildlife lover Marcia Meara will explain how to attract birds to your backyard from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at DeBary Hall Historic Site, 198 Sunrise Blvd.

Meara will offer tips on selecting the right feeder for the birds you want to attract, building your own birdbath and feeder, and choosing supplemental water sources to improve the birds’ health. She will also explain which types of plants birds need for cover and natural food sources. A Q-and-A session will follow her presentation.

DeBary Hall Historic Site, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is owned by the state and managed by the county’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Division. Tours of the 1871 mansion are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission prices are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for children 2 and younger.
