The 12th annual Daytona Beach Half Marathon, presented by Brown and Brown Insurance, returns Feb. 8 and 9 with all the sun, surf, speed and swag that’s made the event a favorite!
The 13.1-mile race again offers runners the opportunity to start on the famed Daytona International Speedway and run to the hard-packed sands of the World’s Most Famous Beach, where racing got its name. Runners will cross the finish at ONE DAYTONA retail complex, directly across from Daytona International Speedway, to a post-race party complete with food, drinks and awards. A Lap the Track 5K, which begins a half hour after the half marathon on the race track, makes the event accessible for runners of all levels.
As the kickoff to DAYTONA Speedweeks Presented By AdventHealth, the race is known to attract a race car driver or two. Last year’s participants included Jimmie Johnson, Jamie McMurray and Landon Cassill, who all placed in their age groups! Johnson went on to run the Boston Marathon in 2019, and McMurray has qualified for the 2020 marathon event.
And runners can experience the thrill of NASCAR, as registered participants receive a free general admission ticket to the Clash at DAYTONA and DAYTONA 500 Qualifying presented by Kroger on Sunday, Feb. 9.
“The Daytona Beach Half Marathon blends running and NASCAR into a unique weekend,” said Daytona International Speedway President Chip Wile. “We love that participants from all over the country are able to run on our famed speedway alongside popular drivers, and then return just a few short hours later and experience the thrill of watching those drivers race at speeds nearly 200 miles per hour on the same track.”
2020 also welcomes the return of the Beachin’ It 5K, an out-and-back on the beach Saturday afternoon. Hospitality partners LandShark Bar & Grill and Crabby’s Oceanside will host a post-race party, featuring food, drinks and live music, and a Dave and Buster’s game zone will provide additional entertainment for participants and spectators alike.
Other confirmed sponsors include The Running Elements, who is the official Packet Pickup Partner, The Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Toyota, AdventHealth, Southern Stone Communications, the Daytona Beach International Airport, Daytona Beverages, Gatorade Endurance, Rock Bottom, Daytona State College and the LPGA Tour.
Those looking to earn additional bragging rights can take on one of two challenge options. The Dual 5K Challenge allows runners to compete in both 5Ks for a total of 6.2 miles over two days. Runners wanting to log more miles may tackle the Speedway Challenge and run both the Saturday Beachin’ It 5K and Sunday half marathon, a total of 16.2 miles over two days. Participants of either challenge will earn a third finisher medal, and Speedway Challenge participants will also earn a unique, Speedway Challenge branded apparel item.
