As is often the case in real life, the characters in Celeste Ng’s best-selling novel “Everything I Never Told You” don’t always act in ways that reveal their inner truth. Dr. Alexander Baer, a pastor and therapist, will use the characters‘ behavior to explore issues related to family dynamics in a presentation on Monday, Feb. 3 at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library. The presentation, from 2 p.m.-3 p.m., is part of Volusia County’s celebration of the five-week NEA Big Read program.
Designed to encourage and stimulate community reading, NEA Big Read kicks off locally on Jan. 25 with numerous programs that focus on a single book. Volusia County has chosen the Celeste Ng novel as its title. Dr. Baer uses moments from the book to illustrate how people can learn to speak more openly to others in their lives. His presentation is entitled “Learning how to say the unspoken”.
Dr. Baer and his wife, also a minister, served at a church in Cincinnati while Dr. Bauer pursued his doctoral degree in pastoral counseling. They moved to Daytona Beach in 2005 so he could accept a position as executive and clinical director of the Presbyterian Counseling Center. Dr. Baer retired in 2016, but continues to see a few clients. His presentation will take place at the library, 1001 W. Dixie Freeway, and is open to the public. More information can be obtained by calling the library at 386-424-2910
The NEA Big Read program is being funded in part by a $15,000 grant that the Volusia County Public Library system received from NEA. The Volusia County Council matched that grant with an additional $15,000. The library system’s branches and other venues are hosting more than 130 programs such as book discussions, author talks, concerts and informative presentations based on the novel. The NEA Big Read program will run through Feb. 29. A complete list of local events can be found at www.volusialibrary.org.
