DeBary Hall plans December events

DeBary Hall Historic Site is planning various events for December that feature helpful hints, history, activity and fun for all. Upcoming events include:

The newest and safest bike trails in Central Florida: 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2: Learn about the newest rail-to-trail and other paved trails throughout Volusia County and beyond with trail enthusiast Roger Fulton. He will also address some of the older great bicycle trails in Central and Northeastern Florida. 

History of gardening: 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2: Join Howard Jeffries for a free presentation on the history of gardening. Jeffries is a master gardener with the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension. Take-home sheets with helpful gardening information will be provided.

Get stepping with line dancing lessons: 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, Dec. 2 and 16: Line dancing is a great way to exercise your mind and body. Join DeBary Hall staff for a fun evening full of learning beginner line dances to various music genres. There is a $3 charge for each class.

Story time at DeBary Hall: 9:30 a.m. Fridays, Dec. 3 and 17: Children are invited to Kids Corner, an outdoor story time. DeBary Kids Corner is a free program featuring various stories, songs and activities designed for preschoolers, but children of all ages are welcome.

Santa’s breakfast: 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4: Kick off the holiday season by feasting on pancakes with Santa Claus. Breakfast will be served promptly at 9 a.m. and include pancakes, fruit and more. Afterward, Santa will tell Christmas tales and pose for photos. Children will also make a holiday craft and sing holiday songs. Seating is limited and tickets must be purchased by Nov. 28. The cost is $12 for adults and $10 for children ages 3 to 12.

Backyard beekeeping: 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec.4: Learn about backyard beekeeping with beekeeper Tim Blodgett. He will explain how to attract solitary bees, make bee package kits and much more.  This presentation is part of the free Lemonade Lectures series sponsored by Volusia County. Light refreshments and lemonade will be served.

Historic bike tour along the East Central Regional Rail Trail: 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9: Take a free, guided bike tour from Green Springs Park to Guise Road, 994 Enterprise Osteen Road, Deltona. Learn about the local history from DeBary Hall Historic Site’s staff during a 15-mile ride along the East Central Regional Rail Trail. The ride will include several stops along the way. Participants must bring a bicycle and helmet. Sunscreen, snacks and bottled water are also recommended. Children over 12 are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Accordion concert: 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11: Members of the Central Florida Accordion Club will present a free concert that will include holiday songs and music from all genres, musicians of various skill levels, a display of instruments, and a discussion of the art form.

Holiday candlelight tours: 6 and 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, and Saturday, Dec. 18: Explore DeBary Hall Historic Site during holiday evenings when candlelight will fill the 19th century mansion with a warm glow, accentuating its historical treasures and Christmas decorations. Guests will start in the theater to hear about historical holiday traditions, sing a carol or two, and then be escorted to the mansion for a tour. Advance tickets must be purchased; call 386-668-3840 or email lperez@volusia.org. Admission prices are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for children 2 and younger.

A German guidebook to Volusia County trails: 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec.18: From the Spring-to-Spring Trail to the Halifax River Trail and beyond, German snowbird Edith Kohlbach explains how she fell in love with Florida’s trails and wrote a guidebook about them.This presentation is part of the free Lemonade Lectures series sponsored by Volusia County. Light refreshments and lemonade will be served.

All events will take place at DeBary Hall Historic Site, 198 Sunrise Blvd. Except for the historical bike tour along the East Central Regional Rail Trail, which will take place at Green Springs Park, 994 Enterprise Osteen Road, Deltona.
