Latest information from the National Weather Service
Tropical Storm Nicole continues as a Tropical Storm with expectations of making landfall near the Treasure Coast late this evening as a Category I Hurricane. Volusia County remains at great risk for coastal erosion. Coastal Volusia County remains under a Hurricane Warning and a Storm Surge Warning. Even though Volusia County is outside of the path of the eye, residents should not let their guard down. Significant wind and rain from Nicole will impact our area and now is the time to finish any final preparations and seek shelter in a safe location.
Storm surge of 3 to 5 feet is expected, possibly higher in some areas. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with peak amounts up to 8 inches of rain. The probability for Tropical Storm winds has increased with a small chance of hurricane force winds. Coastal Volusia can expect wind gusts up to 60 to 70 mph, with slightly decreasing intensity of winds further inland. Timing of the arrival of tropical force winds is about 3 p.m. today.
River Flood Warnings continue to remain in effect for the St. Johns River, particularly from Geneva to Astor, which could see a rise in flooding conditions, all depending on the rainfall amounts.
The emergency operations center in Daytona Beach is at full level I activation.
Bridge information
In preparation for the approaching storm, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will lock down the North Causeway Bridge in New Smyrna Beach to marine traffic, beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9.
The bridge will remain closed to marine traffic during the storm and will be reopened after a safety assessment by FDOT.
Additional bridges across Volusia will close to vehicular and pedestrian traffic when sustained wind speeds reach 39 mph. A list of bridge closures and bridge opening information will be available at volusia.org/PIN.
