Family Nutrition Program
The Family Nutrition Program (FNP) is the Florida component of the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed). It is a partnership between the USDA, the University of Florida/IFAS, and the Volusia County Extension Office. The purpose of this USDA grant is to provide nutrition education to SNAP, formerly known as food stamp, eligible Florida residents. Schools with a student population of 51 percent or more who receive free and/or reduced lunches are eligible for our educational programs. Educational services are also available to SNAP eligible Volusia County residents through community-based organizations.
The goal of FNP is to reduce the risk of chronic disease, health complications, and food borne illness and increase food security. Classes provide practical hands on education with priority lessons focusing on making healthful food choices, balancing food and physical activity, keeping food safe to eat, and food shopping on a budget.
Program Assistants, who are University of Florida employees, receive continuous training and support from the FNP program coordinator. Curriculum and support materials are provided through the University of Florida Extension Service. For more information on the FNP program in Volusia County, contact Patrick Zayas at email@example.com.
