Master Gardeners

Have a gardening/landscape question?
Ask a Master Gardener

Master Gardeners are available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to answer questions and help you diagnose plant problems. Call 386-822-5778 or visit them at the Volusia County Agricultural Center, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand.

Master Gardeners are volunteers who serve as "plant assistants" to residents who call the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension with gardening questions. Master Gardeners must pass a 80-hour course on urban gardening and are expected to volunteer 75 hours the first year, 35 hours each year in following years to the Extension and earn 10 continuing horticultural educational units (CEUs).

The MG training program is demanding and intensive. Formal classroom work constitutes more than 50 percent of the 80-hour training period. Subjects include basic botany, soils, fertilizers, vegetables, entomology, citrus, turf grasses, use of and alternatives to chemicals, pest control, ornamentals, diseases and related topics. All information is based on knowledge and research from the University of Florida.

Each weekly session is a minimum of six hours. Part of the day is spent doing practical, hands-on activities related to the theory presented. The registration fee includes a training manual and other supplies for the 10-week course.
