Internship Eligibility and Requirements

Our internship program is designed to attract, develop and retain hardworking, resourceful individuals who want to make a difference in local government. Our goal is to help you gain the hands-on experience you need to build a solid career foundation for the future. Internships, which are coordinated through the county’s Human Resources Division, provide opportunities for students to learn about county government and its role in the community, as well as county employment opportunities.

To intern for Volusia County government, you must be:

  • Enrolled in an accredited college, university or vocational school in Volusia County; or a Volusia County resident who is enrolled in a school outside Volusia County.
Students from schools outside Volusia County who are not county residents may be considered for internships provided their area of study is not offered in a school in the county but the service is offered by county government (e.g. a degree in Library Science or Veterinarian Medicine).
  • A full-time undergraduate student (minimum of 12 credit hours in the fall or spring semester; minimum of 6 credit hours in the summer semester); a full-time graduate student (9 credit hours); or a full-time student in an associate degree or vocational program.
  • Seeking a degree in an area of study related to the internship position.
  • Must be receiving school credit or fulfilling an internship requirement for his/her degree program.

Undergraduates must maintain a 2.8 GPA or higher on a 4.0 grade scale; graduate students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Internships last a maximum of one semester, usually 10-16 weeks depending on the school and time of year.

Pay and compensation

Undergraduate interns are paid $11 an hour; graduate interns receive $13 an hour.  College credit is determined by the school.
