Mission and purpose

The Green Volusia program was established to expand green practices within county government operations and to provide information and education about environmentally responsible practices that benefit the community as a whole. The Green Volusia program has many goals, which include encouraging stewardship and conservation of Volusia County's natural resources and promoting an understanding of the benefits provided by these natural resources.

On June 5, 2008, the Green Volusia program was officially adopted by the Volusia County Council as a long-term initiative intended to promote the sustainable use of county resources and educate our citizens. On February 20, 2014, Volusia County Council adopted the Volusia County Sustainability Action Plan. The Sustainability Action Plan was created through an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block grant. This plan is coordinated through the Green Volusia Program and identifies seven specific sustainability goals:

 Provide a Healthy Economy

 Maintain a Healthy Environment

Encourage Efficient Transportation and Community Design

Conserve Energy and Promote Water Efficiency

Conserve Energy and Promote Renewable Energy

 Reduce Waste and Promote Recycling

 Promote a Healthy Community

"Now, more than ever, it is important to balance environmental and economic considerations in our daily operations. A sustainable future for Volusia County, and our entire region, will be based on solutions that include environmental, economic and social considerations."
