Emergency Management recognized as ‘Storm Ready’

Posted On: March 6, 2018

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has renewed Volusia County Emergency Management’s StormReady recognition.

StormReady is a nationwide community preparedness program that encourages communities to proactively manage hazardous weather operations using clear-cut guidelines from the National Weather Service. According to NOAA, StormReady communities are better prepared to save lives from the onslaught of severe weather through advanced planning, education and awareness.

“Volusia County is vulnerable to many natural disasters, particularly devastating thunderstorms and hurricanes,” said Jim Judge, director of Volusia County’s Emergency Management Division. "This renewed designation helps strengthen our local hazardous weather operations by ensuring that our community leaders have the tools needed to receive life-saving National Weather Service warnings in the quickest time possible.”

StormReady guidelines include maintaining a warning and emergency operations center, promoting public readiness through community seminars, and developing a formal hazardous weather plan.

Emergency Management first attained the StormReady designation in 2001. The recognition is in effect through April 9, 2021.
