Nicole update 5: Unincorporated solid waste, recycling and yard collection, Votran services and other closures

Unincorporated waste collection service update
Regular waste collection service for the unincorporated areas of Volusia County will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Collection hours have been modified to begin at 5 a.m. and will be complete by 4 p.m.
Waste collection services for the unincorporated areas of Volusia County, normally scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 10, will be canceled. Residents should not place waste receptacles or yard trash at the curb on this date.
A makeup day for Thursday collection has been tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12, weather permitting. The makeup day is only for those residents who missed collection on Thursday. Residents are encouraged to check Volusia.org/pin for the latest updates.
Normal residential solid waste collection guidelines will be in effect and are listed below:
- Garbage pickup service includes the blue 95-gallon cart and two additional 32-gallon size containers.
- Recycling
- Yard trash pickup service is limited to 4 cubic yards per week. Limbs may not exceed 4 feet in length or 1 foot in diameter. Cans and limbs must weigh less than 60 pounds.
- Whole trees cut or blown down are NOT included in yard waste service.
- Bulky waste is limited to four pieces of furniture, appliance, carpet and tires.
- Carpet must be cut, rolled and tied (or taped) in bundles no greater than 4' x 8' and no more than 60 pounds in weight.
- Construction and demolition debris (aluminum siding, tile, screening, drywall, etc.) is not included with normal residential waste collection services. Homeowners are responsible for disposal.
The Tomoka Landfill and West Volusia Transfer Station will close at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, and resume normal operations on Friday, Nov. 11, weather permitting. Residents within the cities’ incorporated limits should check with their city's solid waste department for information about waste collection.
Votran
Votran will suspend fares Wednesday, Nov. 9, and Friday, Nov. 11. Service will run Wednesday but will be suspended at 7 p.m. beachside. Once weather conditions warrant it unsafe to be on the roads, service will be suspended on all Votran routes. Votran will not operate on Thursday, Nov. 10, and will resume on Friday, Nov. 11, weather permitting.
Evacuation points for those seeking transportation to local county shelters will be staged at the following locations, beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9:
- Transfer Plaza in Daytona Beach
- Julia and Sams Connection Point in New Smyrna Beach
- Market Place Superstop in Orange City
SunRail
Due to Tropical Storm Nicole, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is suspending SunRail service beginning Wednesday, Nov. 9. Once the storm passes, a complete inspection of the entire corridor is necessary before services will resume. Marine Science Center
The Marine Science Center will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 9, through Friday, Nov. 11. The center will reopen Saturday, weather permitting.
Clerk of the Circuit Court
Court facilities in Volusia County will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 9, and Thursday, Nov. 10, in preparation for Tropical Storm Nicole. In addition, all court facilities will be closed on Friday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day.
Florida Department of Health
Offices in Volusia County will close on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 9 and 10. The Florida Department of Health continues to coordinate with local emergency managers on resource requests and is on-site at the State Emergency Operation Center in Tallahassee responding to Tropical Storm Nicole.
Volusia County Libraries
All Volusia County library branches will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, except for the Daytona Regional Library, which will close at noon Wednesday, Nov. 9.
Daytona Beach International Airport
Daytona Beach International Airport will close at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, due to Tropical Storm Nicole. All flights after this time are canceled, with the exception of government, emergency and humanitarian aircraft. The airport is scheduled to reopen at 4 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11. Passengers should check with their airlines for updates to flight schedules.
