Artificial reef program
Volusia County's Artificial Reef Program has been in place since 1980. There are 18 artificial reef sites and over 150 individual artificial reefs located from one to 20 miles offshore of Ponce de Leon Inlet. The existing artificial reefs have been created by strategically placing concrete material and steel ships on the continental shelf in depths ranging from 50 to 120 feet and are intended to create essential fish habitat and provide recreational opportunities.
Please keep a safe and respectful distance from other vessels fishing and diving the individual reef sites. Florida law requires all vessels to make a reasonable effort to maintain a distance of at least 300 feet from any divers-down flag.
If you are interested in donating materials for use in the County's Artificial Reef Program or have questions, please contact Niles Cyzycki with the Volusia County Coastal Division at ncyzycki@volusia.org. All materials donated must be equal to or exceed 500 pounds in weight, have no exposed rebar, and be free of oil, grease, and other pollutants.
