Rip Current Simulation Classes

Volusia County is expanding how residents and visitors learn about ocean safety by offering interactive rip current education classes. These sessions are designed to provide a clear understanding of how rip currents form, what they feel like, and how to respond safely if caught in one.

Using a specialized rip current simulator, participants can experience conditions similar to those found in the ocean within a swimming pool. This hands-on approach helps build confidence, reduce panic, and reinforce lifesaving techniques in a safe setting.

Rip Current Simulator

During each class, Beach Safety staff will cover:

  • What rip currents feel like
  • How to react if caught in a rip current
  • How to identify rip currents from the shoreline
  • The importance of staying calm and conserving energy
  • Note: Sessions focus on ocean safety and rip current awareness and are not intended to teach participants how to swim.

These classes are open to both residents and visitors and are suitable for a wide range of ages.
