Volusia County Citizens Academy

Are you interested in learning more about your local county government? Volusia County's Citizens Academy will resume in January 2026.
This opportunity will inform you on how the county is structured, how the budget is developed, and the basic functions, services and activities performed by county staff.
How do I apply?
The 2026 Citizen Academy Application is Open! Interested residents should fill out an application form. Applications are due by December 15th and participants will be notified by December 19th. Citizens Academy is open to Volusia County residents ages 21 and over. Citizens Academy is free of charge.

Our most recent Citizens Academy graduates
Volusia County Citizens Academy is an awareness program designed to educate citizens about county government operation. Department directors, elected officials and other county staff will be featured in each session, and participants will have opportunities to ask questions.
2026 Citizens Academy dates
Members will meet virtually from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. most Thursdays for 12 weeks with an in-person kick off session scheduled for Thursday January 22nd. There will be six field trips scheduled on select Thursday evenings (6 pm – 8 pm) or Saturdays mornings (9:00 am – 12:00 pm). The grand finale is an exciting in-person county council recognition session scheduled for Tuesday April 21st. where members will be recognized for their achievements by the county council.
Participation in the Academy is a valuable opportunity for learning and engagement. Attendance at all scheduled sessions is mandatory for those selected to participate. We understand that unexpected circumstances may arise; therefore, participants are permitted to miss up to three sessions during the program. Consistent attendance ensures you gain the full benefit of the Academy experience and contribute meaningfully to the group’s success.
