It's time to buy flood insurance

Posted On: March 1, 2024

alt textWith lessons learned from 2022’s devastating hurricane season and another hurricane season on the way, it’s time to think hard about flood insurance.

No home is completely safe from the risk of flooding. If you don’t have flood insurance, you could be stuck paying for costly damage on your own. Just one inch of floodwater can cost you $25,000 or more.

Don’t wait for a hurricane or severe storm to purchase flood insurance, Clint Mecham, director of Volusia County Emergency Management, cautions.

“It takes 30 days after purchase for a flood insurance policy to take effect,” he noted. “So, the time to get flood coverage is now, before the hurricane season starts.”

Because of Volusia County's ongoing efforts to manage floodplains and promote flood awareness, residents and businesses in unincorporated areas receive up to a 25% discount on their flood insurance premiums through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

A National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policy covers direct physical losses to your structure and belongings. For more information, visit https://www.floodsmart.gov/.  To sign up, call your insurance agent.
