Iconic Beach Ramp to Get a Facelift

Posted On: May 30, 2024

alt textVolusia County will begin a beautification and construction project on the International Speedway Boulevard vehicular beach ramp on June 10. The project will necessitate the closure of the ramp, toll booth operations, and the public's access to showers and existing restroom facilities. Pedestrian access to the beach and nearby businesses will remain open via the northern sidewalk, and portable toilets will be provided on the beach during construction.

The community has played a vital role in shaping this project, providing considerable input and feedback on the enhancements. The improvement plan includes expanding Florida native landscaping and adding more parking spaces, a new restroom, improved utilities, and new bike racks. There will also be upgrades to sidewalks and lighting and westward relocation of restrooms to protect them from tidal effects.

An integral part of Daytona Beach's heritage, the iconic World's Most Famous Beach sign, will be temporarily removed for secure storage during the improvements. Once reinstalled, the sign will be positioned slightly to the west of its original location with uplighting to comply with Volusia County's Sea Turtle Lighting Ordinance.

This initiative is being coordinated with the City of Daytona Beach and Florida Department of Transportation's efforts to rehabilitate areas of International Speedway Boulevard. This coordination allows the County to begin construction on the ramp before the city and state's project concludes.

The project is expected to be complete by Spring 2025, marking a significant enhancement to one of Volusia County's key access points to the World's Most Famous Beach.
