Dangerous Rip Currents Expected in Volusia County Through Weekend

Posted On: June 22, 2024

Volusia County officials are urging beachgoers to exercise caution as dangerous rip currents are expected to persist through the weekend and into early next week. These currents stem from a storm disturbance in the Atlantic Ocean.

Lifeguards alone rescued 62 people from rip currents on Friday, June 21. Officials advise swimming in front of staffed lifeguard towers and not venturing deeper than waist-high water, especially for small children and those unfamiliar with ocean swimming.

If caught in a rip current, do not panic. Swim parallel to the shore until out of the current, then head back to land. If unable to reach the shore, signal for help immediately.

In case of witnessing someone struggling in the water, call 911 immediately. Download the Volusia Beaches app for information on staffed lifeguard towers, beach conditions, and open beach access points.
