Hurricane Debris Removal Continues
Posted On: November 1, 2024
Volusia County's debris removal operations in unincorporated areas and along County-maintained roads have already collected over 60,000 cubic yards. With more than 30 hauling units actively engaged, we are on track to meet the Jan. 11 deadline for 100% FEMA reimbursement.
Volusia County Opens Four Vegetative Debris Drop-off Sites
To aid in the continued recovery efforts following Hurricane Milton, Volusia County has opened four vegetative debris drop-off sites where residents can dispose of vegetative debris free of charge from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
- Tomoka Landfill, 1990 Tomoka Farms Road, Port Orange
- Old Plymouth Landfill, 1991 W. Plymouth Ave., DeLand
- 1990 Air Park Road, Edgewater
- 1360 Veterans Memorial Parkway, Orange City
Residents must provide identification showing proof of Volusia County residency. Contractors are legally required to dispose of vegetative debris properly and must take all debris to the Tomoka Landfill, 1990 Tomoka Farms Road, Port Orange, or the West Volusia Transfer Station, 3151 E. New York Ave., DeLand.
FEMA Extends Debris Removal Authorization to Private Roads
Volusia County will begin collecting vegetative storm debris stemming from Hurricane Milton on private roads in unincorporated areas starting Friday, Nov. 1. Initially, the County's debris operations, which began on Oct. 18, received Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approval to request reimbursement for debris pickup on County-maintained roads. FEMA has now extended its authorization, allowing the County to seek reimbursement for debris removal costs on private roads as well.
County crews and contractors will make a single pass to collect unbagged vegetative debris. Residents along private roads in unincorporated areas must separate vegetative debris from bagged debris, as well as from construction and demolition materials. The program will exclude bagged debris, construction materials, electronics, and hazardous items such as paint and tires. Only unbagged vegetative debris is eligible for collection.
The County's debris hotline is available daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to address questions about debris removal. Residents can reach the hotline at 833-843-2985. Those living within city limits should contact their local city government for debris removal information.
HOAs and Mobile Home Parks Must Submit Debris Removal Form
Homeowner associations that maintain their roads and mobile home parks in unincorporated areas of Volusia County must provide a Right of Entry form, as required by FEMA, to enable the County and its contractors to remove debris from the side of the road. Volusia County has been contacting these communities to inform them about the requirement and to gather the necessary forms.
Any homeowner associations or mobile home parks that have yet to submit a Right of Entry form and are interested in debris removal should do so as soon as possible. This will ensure the timely processing of their request. The County plans to start debris removal in these communities with a single pass for vegetative debris only on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
Residents in applicable communities must separate vegetative debris from bagged debris, as well as from construction and demolition materials. The program will exclude bagged debris, construction materials, electronics, and hazardous items such as paint and tires. Only unbagged vegetative debris is eligible for collection.
