When the first group of Breeze Airways passengers arrived at Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB) on Nov. 14, a spirited crowd of county officials, tourism proponents, and cheerleaders gave them a hearty welcome.
Breeze Airways offers direct flights to and from Westchester County, New York, on Thursdays and Sundays. In mid-February, it will add flights to Hartford, Connecticut; Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; and Providence, Rhode Island.
Breeze is one of two ultra low-cost carriers now offering nonstop service at the Volusia County-run airport to various east coast destinations. Avelo Airlines, which began flying to Daytona Beach last year, offers twice-weekly flights to Wilmington, Delaware, and New Haven and Hartford, Connecticut. On April 3, Avelo will add twice-weekly service to and from Charlotte’s Concord-Padgett Regional Airport.
“Our air service development team has been talking with the route planners at Breeze for more than two years, continually building relationships, and now we can celebrate a huge air service win for our community and welcome even more visitors to our beautiful destination,” said Airport Director Karen Feaster.
David Neeleman, Breeze Airways’ founder and CEO, said: “We have continued to see opportunities for growth on Florida’s eastern coast, and that’s evident by this announcement of four nonstop routes from Daytona Beach. These great destinations will give the community more affordable, yet elevated travel options.”
Volusia County Aviation and Economic Resources Director Cyrus Callum noted that Breeze will bring a major economic impact to the Daytona Beach region.
“These four additional flights will result in an annual economic impact to the region of more than $21 million a year,” Callum said. “In 2023, DAB’s annual economic impact was measured at $3.2 billion according to an annual study by the Florida Department of Transportation. Each time more flights are added that impact grows exponentially which benefits the entire community.”
In addition to Breeze Airways and Avelo Airlines, legacy carriers American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have served the airport for 15 and 44 years, respectively.
