Road & Bridge Crews Clear Canals to Maintain Stormwater Flow
Posted On: March 5, 2025
Volusia County’s Road & Bridge crews work year-round to ensure that county-maintained canals are cleared routinely to promote the positive flow of stormwater and minimize mosquito production habitats.
The crews maintain 137 miles of open channel canals and their associated rights-of-way for the East Volusia Mosquito Control District. This routine maintenance aids in maintaining flow velocity in the canals that contributes to source reduction of mosquito breeding. Mosquito production habitats are minimized by maintaining flow and/or allowing access for fish that eat insect larvae.
Since the beginning of this year, vegetative debris and sediment have been mechanically removed from open channels in these areas:
- C-4 along Old Mission Road in New Smyrna Beach
- C-6 along Wildwood Drive south of State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach
- C-12 near South Street and the New Smyrna Beach Airport
- B-12 near South Keech Street in Daytona Beach
- B-17 along Strickland Range Road in Daytona Beach
- B-19 from Madeline Avenue to Big Tree Road in the Port Orange and Daytona Beach area
- B-19 from Big Tree Road to Beville Road in Daytona Beach
- B-21 near Halifax Drive in Port Orange
- B-29 near Sixth Street in Holly Hill
- B-29 between Mason Avenue and Second Street in Daytona Beach
- A-1 near Old Kings Road, north of Ormond Beach
- A-11 near Rodeo Road, north of State Road 40
Hats off to our Road & Bridge crews for their ongoing contributions to public safety!
