2025 Hurricane Season: Prepare Now

Posted On: May 28, 2025

As the 2025 hurricane season begins, Volusia County urges all residents to take time now to prepare themselves, their families, and their property. Being ready before a storm forms can make all the difference.

How to Stay Informed

Volusia County uses multiple tools to keep residents and visitors informed before, during, and after a storm. Make sure you’re connected in more than one way:

Build a Disaster Supply Kit

Don’t wait until a storm is near to stock up on essential supplies. Stores may be closed or shelves empty. Start building or updating your disaster supply kit now. Use the Florida Division of Emergency Management’s checklist as your guide: Disaster Supply Kit Checklist (PDF)

Know Your Evacuation Zone

In the event of a hurricane, local officials may issue evacuation orders based on storm strength and projected impact. Volusia County uses three hurricane evacuation categories: A, BC, and DE.

Find out if your property is in an evacuation zone using our interactive map:

Know Your Flood Risk

Flooding can happen anywhere when there is a substantial rain event or storm, even if a property is not classified as high-risk by FEMA. Find your property’s flood zone using FEMA’s official flood mapping tool: FEMA Flood Map Service Center

The Importance of Flood Insurance

Flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster in the United States. Just a few inches of water can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Most standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage. Fortunately, flood insurance is available to all property owners and renters in Volusia County—even those outside high-risk flood zones. Renters can insure their belongings, and property owners can insure their structure and contents.

Don’t wait—most flood insurance policies take 30 days to go into effect.
