Volunteer Disaster Corps Will Provide Critical Support
Posted On: June 23, 2025
Just months after its launch, the Volusia Ready Response Corps is proving that community spirit runs deep in Volusia County. More than 80 residents have already stepped forward to join the volunteer initiative, designed to provide critical support to the county's most vulnerable populations during natural disasters and emergencies.
Launched in May, the program represents a proactive approach to disaster preparedness, focusing specifically on assisting elderly and disabled residents when hurricanes, wildfires, extreme weather events, and other emergencies strike the region.
Building a Network of Community Champions
The Volusia Ready Response Corps was developed through a strategic partnership with Volusia County Community Organizations Active in Disasters, ensuring that the program leverages existing expertise and resources within the community. This collaborative approach has created a comprehensive framework for volunteer deployment and disaster response coordination.
"The enthusiasm we've seen from residents has been truly remarkable," Community Services Director Brad Burbaugh told the volunteers during a recent open house event at the Emergency Operations Center. "By stepping forward, you've made a commitment that truly matters to your community. When disaster strikes, you'll be the hands that help, the voices that comfort, and the strength that helps our county rebuild."
Flexible Training, Diverse Skills Welcome
Understanding that volunteers come from all walks of life, the program has been designed with flexibility at its core. Participants receive specialized training tailored to equip them with essential disaster response skills and resources, but time commitments remain adaptable to individual schedules and circumstances.
Volunteers are not expected to respond to every emergency call, recognizing that people have varying availability and comfort levels. The program actively welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
Strengthening Community Resilience
The initiative addresses a critical need in disaster preparedness, particularly for Volusia County's growing population of elderly residents and individuals with disabilities who may require additional assistance during evacuations or recovery efforts. By training local volunteers in advance, the county is building a more resilient community infrastructure that can respond quickly and effectively when disasters occur.
