After 10 months of anticipation, Volusia County's Marine Science Center threw open its doors to a jubilant crowd of nearly 700 visitors on June 24, revealing a spectacular transformation that promises to revolutionize marine education and conservation efforts along Florida's coast.

The $4.2 million renovation has breathed new life into the beloved facility, creating an immersive experience that brings guests face-to-face with the wonders of marine ecosystems while showcasing the center's life-saving work with injured sea turtles and seabirds.

"The excitement was palpable as families lined up to explore our new world-class facilities and visit our staff members who worked throughout the closure to maintain our critical wildlife rehabilitation," said MSC Manager Chad Macfie. “Even during construction, our dedicated team continued providing care for hundreds of rescued birds and sea turtles.”

A New Era of Marine Discovery

The renovation has transformed the center into a state-of-the-art destination featuring several groundbreaking attractions:

John Crisp Art Exhibit signThe John Crisp Artificial Reef Exhibit takes visitors on an underwater journey, demonstrating how Volusia County's innovative artificial reef program creates thriving marine habitats while supporting local fishing and diving communities.

A spacious 1,500-square-foot multipurpose education building now serves as the hub for expanded educational programming, accommodating larger groups and offering enhanced learning experiences for visitors of all ages.

Living shoreline and living reef exhibits provide dynamic, hands-on demonstrations of coastal ecosystem restoration, showing how natural solutions can protect our shores while supporting marine life.

The working coral lab represents a major leap forward in marine research, offering real-world laboratory experience to high school and college students while contributing to vital coral conservation efforts.

Additional improvements include enhanced parking facilities, upgraded visitor amenities throughout the main building, and a specialized aquarium quarantine deck that ensures the health and safety of new marine life joining the exhibits.

Two Decades of Life-Saving Impact

This remarkable record of wildlife rehabilitation continues to grow daily as the center responds to rescue calls throughout the region.

The renovation project - funded through a Volusia ECHO grant, private donations, and the American Rescue Plan Act - ensures the center can expand its conservation impact while providing visitors with an unforgettable educational experience.
