We’re thrilled to welcome Gus Zambrano as our new Assistant County Manager, effective Aug. 25. With nearly three decades of leadership experience in local government, Zambrano brings exceptional expertise that will directly benefit our community and county employees.
Supporting Major Initiatives
In his new role, Zambrano will work closely with County Manager George Recktenwald on critical special projects, including the Transform386 initiative – a massive undertaking managing over $400 million in federal funding for Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Milton recovery efforts.
"Gus has been a transformational leader for 27 years," Recktenwald shared with the Volusia County Council. "His proven expertise at the executive level and track record of delivering results while building stronger, more resilient communities makes him the ideal leader to help us achieve our ambitious goals."
A Career Built on Results
Zambrano's impressive journey in the public sector began in 1998 as a Planner with the Town of Davie. His strategic thinking quickly propelled him through increasingly responsible positions, including director roles in Miramar where he delivered remarkable results: over 7,000 new jobs and $250 million in capital investment that truly revitalized the community.
Most recently, as Assistant City Manager in Hollywood, Florida, Zambrano successfully orchestrated a complex portfolio spanning sustainable development, public works, utilities, and parks, and construction management. His crowning achievement was managing a $600 million five-year capital improvement program – experience that directly translates to the major projects we're tackling here in Volusia County.
Strong Academic Foundation
Zambrano holds a master's degree in urban planning from McGill University and a bachelor's degree in Geography from Concordia University. He’s also certified with the American Institute of Certified Planners. His excellence has earned national recognition – a prestigious award from the International City/County Management Association honoring his 25 years of dedicated service.
Looking Forward
With Zambrano's proven expertise in sustainability, resilience, and large-scale project management, Volusia County employees can look forward to enhanced support for the initiatives that matter most to our community. His collaborative approach and results-driven leadership style will undoubtedly strengthen our team's ability to serve residents effectively.
