Library Facilities Manager Dale "Rusty" Larrimore has been named Paraprofessional of the Year by the Florida Library Association, recognizing his outstanding dedication to the Volusia County Public Library.
With nearly two decades of service, Larrimore manages facility operations for all 15 library buildings with a team of just four skilled trades workers. A trained electrician, his expertise now spans multiple discipline, including plumbing, carpentry, HVAC repair, and masonry – skills he's developed through hands-on experience and continuous learning.
"Rusty is a great worker and an exceptional steward of resources," said Assistant Library Director Melissa Reynolds. "He balances facility support, capital improvement projects, and aesthetic enhancements for 15 library buildings with a limited crew."
Larrimore's contributions extend far beyond routine maintenance. During major weather events like Hurricanes Ian, Matthew, Helene, and Milton, Larrimore has been among the first to respond and last to leave, working alongside first responders and leadership to protect county assets.
He's helped oversee everything from children's reading nooks shaped like boats to bicycle-powered mobile libraries to repairing the inaugural set of Pedal Forward Project refurbished bicycles for community members who need transportation to work.
This statewide recognition reflects not only Larrimore's technical expertise but his innovative problem-solving and unwavering commitment to serving Volusia County residents through the library system.
