Keeping Volusia Moving: Road and Bridge Division's Tireless Work
Posted On: October 8, 2025

Volusia County's Road and Bridge Division works year-round to maintain and protect the County's critical infrastructure, ensuring residents can travel safely no matter what challenges arise.
The 134 dedicated employees are responsible for maintaining and upgrading the existing transportation system throughout the county – all year long. This includes asphalt repair, mowing, drainage, dirt road maintenance, tree removal work, and maintenance of all bridges.
The drainage task team takes a proactive approach to maintenance activities to alleviate flooding throughout our communities. Crews work diligently throughout the year to regrade ditches and flush culverts, ensuring stormwater can flow efficiently away from neighborhoods and roads. This preventive maintenance is crucial work that often goes unseen but makes a significant difference when heavy rain arrives.
Emergency Response
When storms threaten our community or floodwaters rise, this hard-working team is always ready to respond. The past three years have put the division to the ultimate test, with three major hurricanes impacting Volusia County. Hurricane season is an all-hands-on-deck operation for Road and Bridge crews, who work tirelessly both before and after storms hit. Before a storm arrives, teams focus on flood mitigation efforts and safety preparedness, positioning equipment and fine-tuning response plans.
Once the storm passes, their work shifts into high gear – clearing fallen trees and debris from roadways, inspecting bridges and roads for damage, and making emergency repairs. The division's rapid response helps our community recover faster and keeps essential services accessible when residents need them most.
"Our team has shown incredible dedication and resilience these past few years," said Road and Bridge Director Lori Koontz. "Hurricane response demands everything from us – long hours, quick decision-making, and the physical demands of clearing debris and making repairs in challenging conditions. But our crews understand how critical their work is to keeping Volusia County safe and moving. I'm proud of their commitment to serving our community, and I'm grateful for their expertise and tireless efforts."
Public Service at its Finest
From routine maintenance to emergency response, the Road and Bridge Division exemplifies public service at its finest. These employees work in all weather conditions, often behind the scenes, to maintain the roads, bridges, and drainage systems that connect our communities. Their preparation, quick response, and dedication to preventive maintenance help protect residents and property across Volusia County. As we continue through hurricane season, we recognize and appreciate the Road and Bridge Division's essential role in keeping our county safe, accessible, and resilient.
